Exaltation
A planet in a sign of honor and strength.
Exaltation describes a placement where a planet is elevated and expressive, but sometimes idealized. It can show excellence and high standards.
Example
Moon in Taurus (exalted) finds emotional stability through sensory comfort; Saturn in Libra (exalted) structures relationships with fairness and commitment.
Cultural Context
Exaltation may be older than domicile — some scholars trace it to Babylonian omen texts. Unlike domicile (where a planet is comfortable at home), exaltation puts a planet in a place of honor, like a guest at a royal court. The planet operates with prestige but isn't fully in charge.
Famous Example
The Sun is exalted in Aries (19° specifically in traditional astrology). Many successful leaders have Sun in Aries — the combination of solar vitality with Aries initiative creates natural authority and the drive to lead.
Did You Know?
Each planet has a specific degree of exaltation (Moon at 3° Taurus, Sun at 19° Aries, etc.). Planets exactly at these degrees are considered especially powerful. The exaltation degrees may derive from ancient observations of where planets appeared brightest or most visible.
