Houses

The 12 life areas where planetary energies play out.

The 12 houses divide your chart into life domains: self, money, communication, home, creativity, work, partnerships, transformation, philosophy, career, community, and spirituality. Planets in a house focus their energy in that life area.

Example

Venus in the 7th house focuses love energy on partnerships; in the 2nd house, on finances and self-worth.

Cultural Context

The 12-house system dates to Hellenistic astrology (around 1st century BCE). Multiple house systems exist — Placidus, Whole Sign, Koch, Equal — and astrologers debate which is 'correct.' Whole Sign houses (assigning one sign per house) is the oldest system and has seen a major revival. Most modern software defaults to Placidus, though many professional astrologers are switching to Whole Sign.

Famous Example

Astrologer Howard Sasportas wrote 'The Twelve Houses' (1985), which became the definitive modern reference for house meanings. His psychological approach transformed how astrologers interpret houses — moving from event prediction ('you'll inherit money') to personal development ('how you relate to shared resources').

Did You Know?

In Whole Sign houses, your Ascendant sign becomes your entire 1st House, regardless of where in the sign the Ascendant falls. This means two people with the same Rising sign have the same house-sign pairings. The difference lies in the degree of the Ascendant, which still affects transits and progressions.
