Dignity

How well a planet functions in a particular sign - its strength or weakness.

Planetary dignity describes how comfortably a planet operates in a given sign. In domicile, the planet rules the sign and is at home. In exaltation, it's honored and elevated. In detriment (opposite its domicile), it struggles. In fall (opposite its exaltation), it's debilitated. These aren't "good" or "bad" but describe ease of expression. A planet in detriment must work harder but often develops more nuance.

Example

Mars is in domicile in Aries (powerful and direct), but in detriment in Libra (must learn diplomacy over directness).

Cultural Context

The essential dignity system is ancient, appearing in Hellenistic texts. Medieval astrologers created elaborate scoring systems (almuten calculations) weighing multiple dignities. Modern psychological astrology de-emphasizes dignity as 'good/bad' and reframes weaker placements as growth opportunities.

Famous Example

Abraham Lincoln had Saturn exalted in Libra — Saturn's discipline and structure expressed through Libra's justice and fairness. His role in ending slavery and preserving the Union demonstrates Saturn exalted: principled structure serving higher ideals.

Did You Know?

There are five levels of traditional dignity: domicile, exaltation, triplicity, term/bound, and face/decan. Medieval astrologers assigned point values to each and totaled them. Modern astrology usually only uses domicile and exaltation, plus their opposites (detriment and fall).
