Vertex
A fated encounters point - where destiny meets your chart.
The Vertex is where the prime vertical (the great circle passing through the zenith, nadir, and due east/west points) intersects the ecliptic on the western side of your chart. Often called the 'third angle,' it marks points of fated encounters - relationships, events, or turning points that feel destined rather than chosen. Planets or transits conjuncting your Vertex often coincide with significant, seemingly unavoidable life events.
Example
Someone with Vertex in the 7th house in Scorpio may attract intense, transformative partnerships that feel fated - as if the relationship was 'meant to happen.'
Cultural Context
The Vertex was introduced to Western astrology by L. Edward Johndro in the 1930s and later popularized by Charles Jayne. Unlike the Ascendant (which you project outward), the Vertex represents what comes TO you from outside - encounters that feel fated or beyond your control. It's most commonly found in the 5th, 6th, 7th, or 8th house.

Princess Diana's Vertex was activated by major transits during several pivotal life events - her engagement to Prince Charles, the birth of Prince William, and key turning points in her public life. Vertex activations often feel like 'destiny knocking.'
Did You Know?
The Vertex is calculated using the colatitude method - essentially computing an Ascendant at a latitude that's been transformed (90° minus your latitude, then negated). This mathematical relationship means the Vertex is always in the western half of your chart, typically between the 5th and 8th houses.
