Elements
The four building blocks of astrology: Fire, Earth, Air, and Water.
The four elements describe the fundamental nature of each sign. Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) are passionate and action-oriented. Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) are practical and grounded. Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) are intellectual and communicative. Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) are emotional and intuitive. Understanding elements helps you see patterns in your chart.
Example
Someone with many Fire placements may be naturally enthusiastic and quick to act, while someone with many Earth placements may be more methodical and security-focused.
Cultural Context
The four elements originate from ancient Greek philosophy (Empedocles, ~450 BCE), predating astrology's formalization. The concept spread through Aristotle and Hippocrates — the latter created the 'four humors' medical system mapping elements to temperaments: Fire/choleric, Earth/melancholic, Air/sanguine, Water/phlegmatic.
Famous Example
Princess Diana's chart shows Air dominance (Aquarius Moon, Libra Neptune, Gemini rising) — reflecting her communication skills, social intelligence, and ability to connect across boundaries. Her Fire deficiency (only Sagittarius Rising) may explain her struggle with asserting personal boundaries.
