Domicile
A planet in the sign it rules.
When a planet is in its domicile, it operates with ease and confidence. This placement often feels natural and direct.
Example
Moon in Cancer (domicile) nurtures naturally; Mars in Aries (domicile) asserts itself without hesitation.
Cultural Context
The domicile concept comes from the idea that planets are 'at home' in certain signs — they have full authority and resources. Hellenistic astrologers called this the planet's 'house' (different from the 12 houses). A planet in domicile doesn't need help from other planets.
Famous Example
Muhammad Ali had Mars in Taurus — not its domicile. But Venus (ruling Taurus) was in domicile in Taurus, providing strong support. Understanding domicile helps you see which planets operate independently versus which need assistance from their rulers.
Did You Know?
Before the discovery of outer planets, every sign had one ruler (except Leo and Cancer, ruled by Sun and Moon). Each planet ruled two signs: one day (positive/masculine) and one night (negative/feminine). This created elegant symmetry in traditional astrology.
