Midpoint
The halfway point between two planets or angles.
Midpoints blend two planets into a single theme. When another planet or angle contacts that midpoint (especially by conjunction), the blended theme becomes active.
Example
Venus/Mars midpoint contacts can highlight themes of desire, attraction, and partnership style.
Cultural Context
Midpoint technique was systematized by the Hamburg School (Uranian astrology) in the early 20th century, developed by Alfred Witte and Reinhold Ebertin. The 90° dial and midpoint structures became central to Cosmobiology, which strips astrology to mathematical relationships.
Famous Example
Astrologers note that assassinations and major attacks often involve midpoint pictures (multiple midpoints activated simultaneously). The technique is especially valued in mundane astrology for predicting collective events.
Did You Know?
Every pair of planets creates a midpoint, and most charts contain planets that activate these points. The Sun/Moon midpoint is considered the 'marriage axis' in traditional astrology — planets or angles here strongly influence relationship patterns. Transits to Sun/Moon often time significant relationship events.
